He came in somewhat defeated. His wife had left with his best friend only months ago and he was currently living the life of a divorced Dad with three teenage kids, one of whom decided, somewhat mysteriously (in his eyes) to blame all of the “newness” on him by withholding any kind and loving communication and replacing it with a rather angry silent treatment.

As we navigated this new head and heart space within our sessions, I learned about his childhood and how he experienced his parents’ marriage and ultimately, his parents divorce. By going back, we were able to sit in the present with an awareness of a few different lenses from his childhood that he was still using in his adulthood: outdated, antiquated and no longer accurate lenses. By replacing those lenses with fresher, healthier, and relevant ones, we were also able to generate a healthier, more productive, peaceful lifestyle, one which had his mental wellness strong, which allowed his children to feel supported, safe, heard and understood during this time of important change.

She arrived to her first session feeling good about things, “well enough” she said. She was recently married, they were family planning, she had just received a promotion at work. By prioritizing weekly therapy sessions with her Vervewell therapist, giving to herself this investment, she was able to take it all up another notch, living her very best life full of wellness, depth and connection. Her therapy sessions shined a light on, created an awareness of how, even though it was all going “well enough” her on-going thoughts were placing limits on how well she allowed herself to feel. Her shift in mindset was a breakthrough that still gives me chills. As her therapist, it was an honor to be front row, center to her life being lifted.

Many people hesitate because they think therapy is only for problems. But as indicated here, therapy is available in whichever chapter of the human condition you find yourself. It’s not to stir things up, though sometimes it will, only because sometimes by stirring it up, we see the way to cleaning things out, freshening things up, becoming THE version of YOU that this world needs, that your family needs, that YOU need.

Getting the therapy ball rolling can feel daunting. Vervewell makes it easy and welcoming. I promise, once you do, you’ll wonder why you waited.
