Grief Isn’t Something You “Get Over”

Travelling Deep into the Wilderness of Grief

The loss of someone deeply loved creates a pain within us that words can scarcely hold. Grief expert Dr. Alan Wolfelt describes grief as a “wilderness of the soul,” a disorienting inner landscape we are called to enter and move through, rather than escape. It is a space “betwixt and between,” unfamiliar and often uncomfortable.

In a culture that urges us to move quickly past pain, this wilderness can feel like somewhere we should not linger. Yet grief does not ask us to avoid it, it asks us to go there. To mourn is not to go around suffering, but to move through it.

The word bereaved means “to be torn apart.” When someone we love dies, something within us is torn open. Healing is not about returning to who we were, but about learning to live and love within what has changed.

Grief is not a problem to solve. It is a natural and necessary expression of love, as unavoidable as breathing.

As a therapist, my role is not to help you get over your grief. My role is to companion you. This means creating a sacred space where your grief can be expressed, listening with the heart, and being present without trying to fix.

To companion is to walk alongside you into the wilderness and bear witness. Together, we honor your story and move at the pace your grief requires, trusting the quiet, sacred momentum already within you.

You do not have to walk it alone.

If you or someone you know has experienced the loss of someone deeply loved, I would be honored to venture into that wilderness beside you, and help you find a place where you can live and love again.
