This post is for our dads, brothers, uncles, sons and husbands…the men in our lives. Our very own Jason Leito, LPC, not only invites men to schedule with him for excellent therapy and counseling, he is also extending an invitation to join a cause dear to his heart (he is also a founding member!), the Men’s Society of DFW.
This past weekend I attended the second in-person event for the Men’s Society of DFW, a community for men who understand that strength isn’t about shouldering everything alone, but who want to build real relationships, and take care of their mental health as well as their physical health. I had the chance to speak on male loneliness and the importance of building deeper, more meaningful connections with the people in our lives. It’s a topic I’m passionate about, not only as a therapist, but as someone who believes we all thrive when we have people we can truly lean on.
One of the questions I asked the audience was:
When was the last time you told someone how you were actually doing?
Not the frequented “I’m good” or the often used “busy”, but how you are actually, truthfully feeling. Something you wish you could talk to someone about, but felt uncomfortable bringing up.
Loneliness isn’t simply about being alone. Many people feel lonely while surrounded by coworkers, friends, or even family.
That’s because loneliness is the lack of being known.
We all benefit from having relationships where we can celebrate victories, share disappointments, ask for help, and know we’ll be met with understanding instead of judgment. These kinds of relationships don’t happen by accident. They grow through small moments of honesty, curiosity,
showing up for one another, and being consistent.
This week, I urge you all to try to be a little more honest about how you’re doing with the people you trust around you. You might be surprised by the response.
If you’re in the DFW area and this topic resonates with you, I’d love for you to join us at the Men’s Society of DFW Facebook page. It’s a welcoming community focused on helping men build authentic friendships, grow personally, and support one another. If you’d like more information about upcoming events, reply to this email
